When Natasha and James first thought about their perfect wedding day, they envisioned something straight out of a Disney fairytale – and Moddershall Oaks provided a magical setting.
Set in the Staffordshire countryside with its private lake, ancient oak trees, and newly built woodland pods, this exclusive wedding venue became the real-life version of Disney’s Tangled for their special day. From the carefully chosen purple and gold colour scheme to the lantern decorations and even their dog Flynn (named after the film’s dashing hero), every detail told their unique love story. As their wedding photographer, I had the privilege of capturing all the laughter, happy tears, and unforgettable moments that made this celebration so extraordinary.
Glamming Up in the Prep Pod
The morning bridal preparations unfolded in Moddershall Oaks’ stunning new Bluebells Prep Pod, part of their exclusive woodland pod collection. These luxurious private spaces, tucked away among the trees, provided a serene setting for Natasha and her bridesmaids to get ready in style with their make-up artist. The atmosphere was electric with excitement as Natasha stepped into her Romantica of Devon gown – a dress she’d nearly passed over until her maid of honour Kayleigh insisted she try it. The moment she saw herself in the mirror, with its delicate lace details and soft pink hue (appropriately named “Rumpink”), any doubts vanished. “I feel like a real princess,” she whispered, her eyes shining. Meanwhile, my good friend and second shooter, Adrian from Will Hey Photography was documenting James’ preparations with the groomsmen, capturing all those candid moments of pre-ceremony anticipation.

Outdoor Ceremony in the Oak Gazebo
There were a couple of ceremony options thanks to some nerve-wracking rain showers that threatened to move proceedings indoors to a primed ceremony room. I reassured Natasha that this was good luck in France, but the clouds parted just in time for their outdoor civil ceremony. The oak pagoda, adorned with breathtaking floral arrangements by Dean Sharpe, looked like it had been plucked straight from a storybook. Natasha’s grand entrance was nothing short of magical – walking down the aisle on her father’s arm with Flynn proudly trotting alongside, his little tail wagging away. The ceremony itself was deeply personal, with vows that referenced how they first met (through mutual friends at a pub quiz) and sweet nods to Natasha’s much loved Disney films. Flynn contributed his own vocal endorsements at key moments, much to everyone’s delight. The whole ceremony was full of laughter, emotion and dog woofing!

Drinks, Woodland Walk, and Magic
The drinks reception was a great celebration. Guests enjoyed exquisite canapés and drinks while being entertained by AC Magic performing mind-blowing close-up magic – I spotted several guests looking completely astonished at card tricks happening right before their eyes which made for some fab group shots. Shortly after, I stole the newlyweds away for a relaxed portrait session around the lake. Flynn joined us for these photos, proving to be the most natural model of the day, posing like a pro against the stunning backdrop of the water and woodlands.

Heartfelt Speeches and a Showstopping Surprise
The wedding breakfast in Moddershall’s elegant dining room was a feast for all senses. Beth from Venue Perfection had transformed the space into something out of Rapunzel’s wildest dreams – hanging lanterns, floating candles, and that spectacular “Best Day Ever” neon sign behind the top table. The emotional speeches had everyone reaching for tissues, particularly when James spoke movingly about his late mother. Then came Natasha’s jaw-dropping surprise: as dessert was being cleared, the screens behind them lit up with a pre-recorded ice skating routine she had choreographed and performed specially for James. The room erupted in applause as Natasha, a talented figure skater, glided and spun across the ice on screen – a breathtaking personal touch that left not a dry eye in the house.

Party All the Way
The evening kicked off with a Tangled-themed first dance to I See the Light—except this was no awkward swaying. Natasha, an ice figure skater, had choreographed a full routine complete with a lift by James at the end (just like a Disney prince!). DJ Dave Dee Disco (a personal favourite for keeping dance floors packed) kept the party going late into the night.
From the emotional moments to the hilarious ones (we’ll never forget Flynn’s enthusiastic howls during the ceremony), Natasha and James’ wedding was a masterclass on how to personalise your big day.

Wedding Photography at Moddershall Oaks
1. A Natural Setting for Authentic Wedding Photos
Moddershall Oaks provides a straightforward yet striking backdrop for wedding photography. The venue’s 72-acre countryside setting offers clean, uncluttered scenery—lakeside views, wooded pathways, and an oak-framed ceremony space that works in any season. The indoor area is equally practical, with large skylights ensuring good lighting even for late-afternoon or winter weddings. It’s a functional space that doesn’t force artificial setups, letting candid moments and portraits feel natural rather than staged.
2. The New Woodland Pods: Functional and Photogenic
Moddershall Oaks recently added a set of purpose-built Woodland Pods, designed to streamline the wedding day. The Prep Pod is a practical space for bridal preparations, with ample room for hair and makeup stations, while the Honeymoon Pod offers a quiet retreat post-ceremony. Both are well-designed—not just for comfort, but also for photography. Large windows, neutral interiors, and private outdoor areas mean less time arranging shots and more time capturing genuine moments as they happen.
3. A Practical Venue for Consistent Results
Moddershall Oaks works well for photographers because it eliminates common logistical headaches. The layout is compact but flexible, with easy access to outdoor and indoor areas including multiple ceremony spaces — useful when the weather changes last minute. The staff and wedding co-ordinator are efficient, keeping the day on schedule so there’s no rush to get key shots. And because the venue is used exclusively for each wedding, there are no distractions or awkward background interruptions. It’s a reliable choice for couples who want the photos to reflect the story of your wedding day without unnecessary fuss.
