Sophie and Paddy’s wedding day was all about celebrating local connections and staying true to themselves. Paddy proposed to Sophie while on a beach in Donegal, Ireland—a spot close to Sophie’s family roots. When it came time to plan the wedding, they stayed local with a church ceremony in Marple Bridge and a relaxed reception at the Roman Lakes, a venue they’d visited often for walks and knew would be perfect for outdoor lovers.
The morning started in Hayfield, with Sophie and her bride squad getting ready in a cosy cottage. The Roman Lakes was transformed with wildflowers and their favourite cats appearing everywhere, from the stationery to the cake—details that made the wedding feel genuinely “them.” The church ceremony was personal, featuring a violinist and lots of laughs, especially with Sophie’s veil getting caught and her nephew joining at the altar.
Back at the Roman Lakes, guests enjoyed canapés, ice cream, margaritas, and plenty of bird food for the ducks and geese. Pizza in the evening was a huge hit. Speeches were heartfelt and funny, with Sophie making sure to mention her mum and grandad, and the father of the bride making a nod to the Romans. Their first dance, “Our House” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, summed up their vibe—laidback and happy together, just like cats in the garden.
If you’re after a wedding day that’s fun, authentic, colourful and outdoorsy, the Roman Lakes is a venue that makes you feel right at home. Sophie and Paddy’s story is proof that the best weddings are the ones where you can simply relax, celebrate, and enjoy with family, friends, and nature all around.
