I’m Thomas, a documentary wedding photographer based in Stockport. Manchester city centre is on my doorstep — most venues in the city are less than 20 minutes from me, and it’s an area I know well.

My approach is the same wherever I’m shooting. Relaxed, unobtrusive, focused on what’s actually happening rather than arranging people for the camera. City centre weddings tend to attract couples who want something a bit different, and that suits my documentary style well.

Manchester city centre has its own distinct wedding scene. Converted industrial spaces, Victorian libraries, boutique hotels, and venue spaces tucked into the architecture of the city. It’s a mix that tends to attract couples who’ve thought carefully about what they want rather than defaulting to the country house.

The city itself becomes part of the day in a way that a rural venue can’t replicate. The streets, the canals, the brick and steel — it all adds character, and city centre weddings tend to produce a set of photos that feel distinctly theirs.

I’ve been exhibiting at the Manchester Gay Wedding Show for years, and same-sex weddings make up a good proportion of the city centre weddings I cover. Every couple gets the same relaxed, documentary approach. Love is love, and the city does it well.

What’s it like doing couple portraits in the city centre?

My portraits are relaxed — think of it as a walk in the park rather than a photo session. I’ll take you away from the main celebration for 15 to 20 minutes and we’ll explore the area together. The city makes a great backdrop. The Northern Quarter, the canals, the architecture — there’s a lot to work with, and the result is natural portraits rather than stiff poses.
