When Laura and Neil first got in touch about photographing their wedding, I was excited. I’d met them at Fran and Andy’s big day, where I’d been the wedding photographer, and we’d hit it off straight away. They were looking for someone with a relaxed approach to capture their celebration, and I could guess that it was going to be one full of personality and charm. It certainly lived up to those expectations.
Originally, Laura and Neil had planned to get married in a brewery—a fitting choice for a fun loving couple. But when the brewery fell through, they found their perfect alternative in Scale Liverpool. As the best man humorously pointed out during his speech, they may not have been able to “organise a piss-up in a brewery,” but they certainly knew how to throw a memorable Christmas wedding.
A Festive Theme with a Personal Touch
Laura and Neil’s wedding was a blend of rustic simplicity and Christmas spirit. They wanted a winter theme without it feeling over the top, and they pulled it off beautifully. The decor was understated yet elegant, with natural elements and a few festive touches. Laura’s friend even handcrafted the Christmas trees that adorned the venue, adding a personal and thoughtful element to the day.
The couple also encouraged their guests to embrace the festive vibe by wearing their favourite Christmas jumpers. I think it added a bit of festive flair to the collection of photos. I had a choice between two for myself and couldn’t decide, so I put it to a vote on Instagram—Aldi vs. Screwfix. The Aldi one had to be the ultimate choice, especially as it earned the approval of the bride and groom!

A Relaxed Morning at Hope Street Hotel
The wedding day began at the Hope Street Hotel, where Laura, her daughter, and her mother got ready in a calm and intimate setting. There were no frantic moments—just a relaxed atmosphere, a few glasses of bubbly, and the anticipation of what was to come all sensitively captured in the bridal party photos. Laura’s dress was simple and elegant, perfectly reflecting her style. Though, as she later admitted, the train of the dress was a bit of a hazard!

A Ceremony in the Fabric Studio
The wedding ceremony took place in the Fabric Studio, a unique space on the ground floor of Scale. With its infinity white background—a floor-to-ceiling white backdrop typically used in photography—the room felt modern and minimalist. The addition of a large Christmas tree brought a cozy, festive vibe. Guests were welcomed with glasses of mulled wine or mulled cider, setting the tone for a warm and joyful celebration.
The ceremony itself was straightforward and meaningful, with Laura and Neil surrounded by their closest family and friends. There were no grand gestures, just a genuine sense of connection and a few happy moments. The registrars kept things light and personal, making it an intimate wedding ceremony that felt uniquely theirs.

Mulled Wine, Magic, and a Stormy Stroll
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed more mulled wine and festive drinks during the reception. Despite the stormy weather outside, we braved the cold for a few minutes to capture some couple shots of the newlyweds. We even stumbled upon a funky background outside a gaming place—a nod to Neil’s love of Magic: The Gathering (and mine too!). It was a brief but memorable moment, and the photos turned out brilliantly.

Speeches, Feasting, and Festive Fun
One of the highlights of the day was the speeches, which took place before the wedding breakfast to allow everyone to enjoy their meal without interruptions. Laura’s mother, daughter, and son, along with Neil and the best man, delivered a mix of thoughtful words and humorous anecdotes. The best man’s quip about the brewery debacle had everyone smiling, and the words from Laura’s family added a personal touch.
The wedding breakfast was a vegan buffet by external caterers company Wild Root Kitchen, and it was a real standout. From hearty mains to indulgent desserts, it was incredible food that left everyone impressed. The couple had opted for a relaxed, informal vibe, and it worked perfectly.

A Party with Key Note Entertainment
As the evening rolled in, the wedding party kicked off with Key Note Entertainment, a band that knows how to get everyone on the dance floor. There was no set list—instead, the band took requests from guests, resulting in an eclectic mix of songs. From Sweet Caroline to Earth, Wind & Fire, and even a few Christmas classics and Monty Python tunes, the dance floor was packed all night.
Laura and Neil’s first dance was to Grow Old With Me by Tom Odell, a song that holds special meaning for them. It was the first gig they attended together back in 2012, and the lyrics perfectly captured their commitment to each other. It was a fitting start to an evening of dancing and night of celebration of the happy couple.
